An exceptional James 1st, circa 1625, oak refectory table with a triple full length plank top on eight turned baluster supports with fluted capitals, carved S scrolled brackets to the sides, square stretcher rails and square feet, stamped WW.
The provenance is also exceptional as it was the dining table in the Gloriette (older part) dining room of Leeds Castle, England, until after the war when parties began to develop in lighter rooms behind the front facade of the building. During the war Lady Bailie's family lived in the Gloriette while the front bedrooms were arranged to receive badly wounded airmen, after their operations at the great hospital in East Grinstead, during their recuperation. Lady Bailie aquired the castle in 1926; there is a photograph of the table in place in the Gloriette dining room and her lifelong love of the cinema ensured that guests included some of the most celebrated film stars of their day and members of the Royal Family.
