Item Details

A fine quality antique late 18th-century George III period English oak housekeeper's cupboard or livery cupboard. The cupboard features an elegant protruding cavetto cornice below a solid boarded top. It is divided into three sections. The cornice and the large top section comprises three cupboard spaces with shelves, with reeded canted corners on either side. The middle cupboard door opens to reveal two shaped fixed shelves inside, with two small drawers below. The doors retain their original brass fretwork key escutcheons, working locks, and keys. The cupboard has been built in the traditional manner with pegged construction joints. The lower section features a set of nine graduated working drawers. The drawers boast the original brass swan neck handles and escutcheons, and all drawers and doors have mahogany crossbanding. The cupboard features the original oak top, inset side panels, and backboards constructed with very good quality wide planks. It stands on its original Georgian bracket feet. The cupboard has good proportions, which make it stand well, but it is also a very practical piece of furniture with ample storage space. It dismantles into two sections for easy transport and access into the house. The cupboard boasts a stunning rich brown oak color and patina.
