Item Details

A very decorative late 19th century japanned Cobra Jug by well known maker Loveridge & Co of Clifton, Wolverhampton.

This delightful piece has clearly spent much of it's life in a spot where the sun has faded it to a pretty peachy pink on one side, but thankfully it retains it's decoration to that side still. On the other side you can see the what the original colour must have looked like when it was first made, as it is a much more vibrant pinky red and again the delicate floral decoration remains.

A particular feature of this item is the large and prominent 'Cobra' handle. It was a master stroke in adding it, no doubt for practical purposes as well as decorative, but it just grabs your attention for all the right reasons.

It is overall in good condition. The fading of colour aside, there are no dents or breaks, though there is some rust wear to the inside and the Cobra shaped handle on the top as would be expected.

To the underside is a partially distinct makers stamp, with date lozenge which I think is possibly around the mid-1860s to 70s.

A rare find and a really pretty container for your flowers and being quite tall at approx 44cm, it can take long stemmed plants.

Henry Loveridge was by all accounts a popular, kind and generous man and a very good businessman. He and William Schoolbred established together one of the most successful japanning factories in the Midlands from about the 1840s. Owning their own Works and employing many people.
