Item Details

A George III painted wheel-back or star-back open armchair, associated to designs by Thomas Chippendale. C.1775

The cartouche shaped back with eight pierced spokes radiating from a central medallion, raised on cabriole legs in the 'French' taste with out swept arms.

The traditionally upholstered seat with a black horsehair fabric, finished with brass studs. Structurally sound.

The unique wheel-back of this chair bears a striking resemblance to a collection of cartouche wheel-back chairs captured by Edwin Smith in his 1971 photograph of 'The Balcony Room' at Dyrham Park, Gloucestershire.

Furthermore In 1774, Thomas Chippendale supplied six beech ‘Star back’ chairs with painted decoration to Ninian Home for Paxton House, Scotland.

Interestingly a set of twelve mahogany dining chairs, featuring nearly identical backs and legs, once owned by the Earl of Plymouth, were auctioned at Christie's, London, on May 17, 2017, as lot 91, selling for £100,000.
