Item Details

A delicate and delightful Flemish Baroque polychromed oak carving depicting an Angel with a Cornucopia of red fruits. c.1620.

The period defining Flemish Baroque was defined by the 16th and 17th Centuries when the Spanish Hapsburgs ruled present-day Belgium, know then as the Spanish Netherlands or Flanders. As a distinctly Catholic region, the Spanish Netherlands provided a wealth of opportunities for artists to find work within church commissions; Antwerp became the forefront cultural force in the first decades of the 17th Century.

Pieces such as this Angel would have been commissioned as part of larger altarpiece friezes, or as niche works of art in private chapels for personal worship.
