This expressive and animated work of art was hand-carved in Carrara marble in the Mid 20th Century.
The motif of the winged putto and stork was used to great effect in the gardens of the 17th Century. The base of the sculpture is suggestive of a garden grotto. The piece can be interpreted as an allegory of love, happiness, loyalty and affection.
The stork is seen throughout history as a symbol of good luck: happiness and prosperity. Because the stork returns to the Northern regions in Spring, it was often seen as a symbol of fertility in conjunction with the blooming and resurgence of nature.
The putto is the symbol of love and often depicted as a young boy with wings.
A celebration of life and love!
The surface is beautifully patinated and coloured through time with lichen, there are a number of historical repairs which can be seen in the images and nibbles, but nevertheless do not take away from the magic and charm of this unique and outstanding garden sculpture.
