Item Details

A rare Edward VII Post Box by makers Andrew Handyside of Derby c.1901-1910.

The Handyside foundry of Derby was originally known as the Britannia Works, Andrew Handyside bought the Britannia Iron Works in 1848, and manufactured several ornamental vases in classical purity, form and ornament.
Receiving distinctions at the Great Exhibition in 1850, the quality of their casts were exceptional. It came as no surprise that they were contacted by Royal Mail and from 1855 they also supplied many of the familiar cast-iron post boxes that are still in use today, a testament to their quality.

King Edward VII had a very short reign, of less of a decade, making the appearance of this model even rarer.
A great example of a British cultural icon.

Condition appropriate with age. The paintwork on this wonderful piece has gently faded over the last hundred years or so.
