Item Details

This exquisite Roman glass double cosmetic flask, or ‘Balsamarium’ dating back to the 4th century AD, is a rare and beautifully crafted artefact, showcasing the sophistication of ancient glassmaking techniques. Made from translucent luminous green glass with now iridescent interior the flask features delicate trails in matching hues, adding to its aesthetic appeal. The thick, everted rim, carefully folded over and inward, and the delicate looped handle, demonstrates the expert craftsmanship behind its creation. The body of the flask, comprising two side-by-side tubes, was skillfully fashioned from a single inflated gather of glass, with the sides pinched vertically to create a central diaphragm.

Primarily used to store kohl or other cosmetic substances, this flask would have been a luxurious and functional item in the daily lives of Romans. Its dual-chambered design allowed for the convenient separation of different substances, reflecting the attention to both form and utility in Roman glassware. The rare piece provides a glimpse into the opulence and refinement of ancient Roman society, making it an ideal addition for collectors of ancient artefacts or enthusiasts of Roman culture.
