Item Details

A simply stunning set of four large Italian limestone dancing flower putti c.1740 with exceptional provenance from the grand private collection of Crowe Hall, Bath.

Crowe Hall was built for Brigadier Crowe in c.1760. One of its more recent owners Sir Sydney Barratt & his Son John were responsible for developing the gardens and were exceptional collectors or garden ornament and art.

This important and delightful rare set of hand-carved limestone putti will make a statement in any garden.

The naked putti are poised wrapped in tiny drapes and boughs of seasonal flowers and fruits, resting upon tree stumps. Bacchante in style, and an allegory of the four seasons.
Their bodies are plump and rotund, typically and superbly baroque!

Their surfaces are pitted and patinated by the passage of time, covered with a smattering of white and yellow ochre lichen.
Please see images for a couple of historical repairs.

Provenance direct from Crowe Hall, Bath, UK.

Approx size per putti.
