Item Details

A large pair of French Castelnaudary emerald green glazed Earthernware terracotta pottery jardinieres c.1850.

Created in the South of France in Castelnaudary, Occitane at the beginning of emperor Napoleon III's reign.

The famous pottery houses were renowned for their rustic garden urns featuring a green dripped glazed body decorated with four lobed handles connected to a tapering belly and resting on a circular base with a drainage hole.

This unique and beautiful form was originally designed as jardinieres specifically for citrus trees, with four handles enabling transportation into an orangery or glasshouse for the Winter months, but can be enjoyed in any interior simply for their pleasing rustic primitive shape and stunning colour.

This pair have a particularly beautiful patination.

One urn has all four handles, the other missing two. They have wear and patina appropriate with age.
Diameter of pot 55cm.
