https://www.decorativecollective.com/dealers/collinge-antiquesGood sized oil on canvas painting of traditional shrimp fishing on horseback by the Belgian artist Alfonse de Roeck (1896-1982) c.1970. Two fishermen dressed in yellow oilskins with wicker baskets at their sides use their sturdy horses to drag triangular shrimp nets through the water just before low tide. Painted in a loose impressionistic style in thick oils. With a large signature in the lower right hand corner. Presented in the original carved and gilded wooden frame with an Antwerp Kunsthalle gallery label on the rear. Very good condition.
Once practised widely along the North Sea coast shrimp fishing by horse now only happens in the Belgian seaside town of Oostduinkerke. In 2013 it was added to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
