Sundials work by using the position of the sun to indicate the time of day, using the upright blade, the gnomon, to cast a shadow over the dial. The gnomon needs to point towards true north or true south depending on where you are in the northern or southern hemisphere.
When the gnomon’s shadow falls on these lines, it indicates the time. Each line typically represents one hour, and the space between lines can be used to estimate minutes. Sundials have been used for centuries and are among the oldest tools for measuring time, relying on the consistent movement of the sun across the sky to function.
