Item Details

The scarce planisphere showing the ‘Principal Stars Visible for Every Hour in the Year’, being in printed paper on card with a black goatskin tooled and gilded leather horizon aperture and surviving from late nineteenth century Germany.

The condition is good with one small break to the leather aperture. The reverse shows staining.

In astronomy, a planisphere is a star chart analog computing instrument in the form of two adjustable disks that rotate on a common pivot. Made in Germany for George Philip & Son, this beautiful object is printed with the constellations in the night sky and the days of the year around it. On the back is a printed explanation of how to use the planisphere with a small publisher’s advertisement at the bottom for other astronomy publications. This is the earliest version of this model.

This beautiful instrument is both a rare collectable and a decorative delight.
