20th Century Ziegler Sultanabad Carpet

Ziegler Sultanabad carpets were originally commissioned in Persia for the Western market during the late 19th Century, to complement European furnishing tastes.  Their unique, grand scale drawing, quiet formality, and understated colours made them sought-after additions in stately homes across the UK and Europe. This example represents a late 20th Century reinterpretation of the high-end Ziegler carpets of this period.


A finely woven Ziegler Sultanabad carpet, with short pile in lustrous wool, and gracefully aged natural vegetable dyes; it features a restrained palette, with a muted terracotta/salmon ground in the central field, overlayed with repeated aubergine grey, sage green and ivory tone floral motifs, framed by a tasteful border of great proportion. The artist has opted for a well balanced, open composition, with large scale drawing, reflecting a modern aesthetic sensibility.


Retained in very good to excellent condition, this carpet possesses a discreet elegance that gives it the versatility to suit a wide variety of settings.
