Azerbaijan has a rich history of rug weaving going back several centuries. Due to its geographic location, it stands at the crossroads of various cultures, and its carpets reflect this in their richness and beauty. As such, these pieces are highly desirable today, well-known for their wide range of designs and creative use of vegetable-dyed colours.


This contemporary example represents a modern reimagination of the sought-after Azerbaijani carpets of the 19th Century – it employs design characteristics of earlier weavings in soft vegetable dyes, including tones of camel, ochre and terracotta, over a cornflower blue field. The composition is remarkably open and spacious, especially in relation to this piece’s narrow format.
