6.46 x 4.20 m
The district of Mahal in Northwest Persia has long been a significant weaving center. Its works from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are considered some of the most desirable Persian carpets of that era. This piece exemplifies a category of weavings commissioned by the Manchester-based company Ziegler and Co in the late 1870s for the European market, adapting Classical designs to suit Western decorative tastes. Known for their fine weaves, large-format patterns, and innovative use of color, these carpets are often found in grand historic houses across the UK and Europe.
This elegant example, dating to the last quarter of the 19th century, features a characteristically grand scale drawing. A soft terracotta field provides a beautiful backdrop to the gracefully aged vegetable-dyed colors in its scrolling vegetal design, including muted sage green, ivory, and duck egg blue, all framed by a generously proportioned border.
In very good practical condition for everyday use, this carpet retains its outer borders on all sides - its organic dyes have taken on a characterful patina with age.
A beautiful example of a sought-after type of weaving, it exudes a quiet formality that would complement any setting.
