7.13 x 4.12 m.
English needlepoint carpets have been produced since the 16th Century, but experienced a real renaissance during the 18th and 19th Centuries, incorporating a vast array of new colours and styles – this vintage example represents a high-grade recreation of the needlepoint carpets of this era, drawing from the iconic works of famed architect and designer, Robert Adams, Architect of the King’s Works from 1761 to 1769, credited as among the pioneers of the English Neoclassical movement, and the mind behind some of the UK’s most iconic manor houses.
This unusually large, finely handwoven, vintage example employs a grand scale all-over design – reminiscent of 18th Century English, and French Savonnerie, carpets – in a warm palette, with light coffee tone and olive green medallions, stamped over a muted burgundy field, with sage and ivory accents. Being worked in vegetable dyes, these colours have taken on a charming patina with age.
Retained in excellent condition for everyday use.
A effortlessly sophisticated example of its type, in a rare large format, with a quiet formality to suit a classic interior.
