Mid-Century Nepalese Tiger Rug

2.43 x 1.98 m

Nepalese tiger rugs began to be woven in the early 19th century, as a substitute for the tiger pelts which were becoming increasly scarce. These were largely used within Tibetan monasteries, for meditation, although became sought after objects of design, after first being brought to the eyes of the Western market in the late 20th Century.

This striking mid-century example features the distinct tiger-stripe design, in ivory over a muted charcoal grey field, and framed by a wide, decorative border, with a hooked motif repeated in a variety of soft pastel tones. Despite its age, its open, bold composition and restrained colour palette lend the work a surprisingly modern feel.

Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its borders and short fringes complete on all sides.

An unusual and charming weaving, to suit a tasteful interior.
