4.40 x 2.78 metres
Early Heriz carpets from north-west Persia are in a class of their own. Prized for their geometric designs, fine durable construction, and creative use of vegetable-dyed colours, they make ideal long-lasting rugs and have always stood out for their striking tribal motifs. In our experience, Heriz carpets prove to be among the most versatile decorative weavings, with the ability to unite both modern and traditional design elements in a room.
This stunning 19th Century example boasts a naive, expressive composition, with graphic motifs in an open all-over pattern across a soft terracotta ground – rather than the conventional central medallion layout – in a wide range of fine vegetable-dyed colours, including denim and duck egg blues, ocean green, and pale ochre reds. The central field is surrounded by a wide, rare ivory border, rather than the usual indigo, which serves to frame the drawing. Being an earlier piece, this carpet showcases a high-grade weave in lustrous wool, lending a crisp clarity to the design.
Retained in very good practical condition for everyday use – its organic dyes have taken on a characterful patina with age.
Truly one of the most beautiful examples of its type we have had the pleasure of having in our collection for some time – a sophisticated tribal weaving, to suit a wide variety of settings.
