Item Details

'His Only Rival' by John Arthur Lomax (British, 1857-1923). Oil on board.

John Arthur Lomax was a painter of the historical genre with a dramatic and often humorous theme. He was born in Manchester he then studied in Stuttgart and at the Munich Academy, which was a big influence on his work. The Munich painters of the 19th century were renowned for their carefully selected subjects, meticulous detail and fine brushwork quality; all of these skills are so beautifully represented in his paintings. Lomax later relocated to London.

Lomax's subjects were mainly historical genres of the 17th and 18th centuries, especially of the Civil War period, often with a dramatic or sentimental theme. Lomax exhibited 33 paintings at the Royal Society of British Artists and also exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Manchester City Art Gallery, Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

'His Only Rival' is a stunning painting that exudes every hallmark of Lomax's work. The work is of reasonably large proportions and shows a doting daughter dressing her father with a rose from the table bowl whilst her love interest looks on from the sidelines; her father stands proud, and a little smug. The interior scene is filled with expertly depicted 18th century furniture, fabric and crockery. Signed to the lower left. The work is housed in its fine original gilt frame which is of extremely high quality, titled and glazed.

An outstanding Lomax work.
