Glazed stoneware
By Abdo Nagi (Yemen, 1941-2001)
Dimensions: H11.5cm x D33.4cm
This bowl is a really lovely example of the work of Abdo Nagi.
Born in Yemen, Abdo Nagi spent his early years working on the family farm. He then came to England as a domestic servant seeking a new life. After completing A-levels and working at various jobs, Abdo began to discover his artistic abilities, first in painting and then through pottery, which he found a natural medium through which he could express himself. He achieved a BA (hons) degree from the University of Middlesex and his degree show was a notable success. Shows followed at The Crafts Council, (1991), The Contemporary Arts Society, (1992) and The Craft Potters Association, (1993). Several more shows were held in London and England in the later 1990s, including at The British Museum, where five of his works are on indefinite loan.
Through his unique glazes and his skilful purity of form, Abdo Nagi was able to evoke memories of the landscape and colours of his native country, Yemen.
