A 19th Century French Mahogany Bookcase or Display Cabinet of Exceptional Quality.


Of useful and suitable size, and unusually under two metres in height, this fine library bookcase stands on a low plinth base with rounded corners, this form being echoed in the rounded, fluted columns to each side and the slightly concave moulding used for the cornice. The piece was conceived in the breakfront style, the central section protruding forward slightly. The doors have fine wire grills the lower sections having panelled and crossbanded features. Behind each door is a series of three fixed shelves.


This bookcase is of unusual design and very well made. All of the elements of this piece suggest that it was produced by a major Parisian workshop, quite possibly as a commissioned piece.
