Item Details

An Interesting Pair of 19th Century Painted Armchairs of Curule or X-Frame Form.

These lovely chairs take certain features from the earlier Sheraton pattern book, particularly in terms of the form of the arm supports and the raking backs. The ebonised and parcel gilt paint is typical of the regency period. The back splats with their two semi-circular motifs joined in the centre. The x-frame design comes from an early form of chair known as a curule and this style was repurposed in the regency period. The tapering toupie feet to the front legs are also very finely turned and elegant. The original paintwork on the chairs has aged beautifully.

The chairs have caned seats, and are supplied with their original squab cushions.
