Item Details
A charming little watercolour of a gentleman stood by the sea with two ships visible in the background.
This painting dates to the Georgian period, c.1830 and is housed in a period, probably original, frame. There is some staining and discolouration to the paper - particularly noticeable with a band in the lower right corner but after nearly two centuries, it presents well.
According to a paper label affixed to the reverse, the painting is of "Matthew Harrison, brother of Jane Harrison b.1800 d.1896" this leads onto a short family tree of Jane who married a Stonehouse... A quick search does find a Matthew Harrison also born in 1800 who was a linen draper - if this is the same Matthew Harrison, it could account for his smart attire and placement near the coast (i.e. a port). Potentially an interesting little bit of history for those who wanted to research further.
The picture measures 36cm high x 26.5cm wide x 3cm deep.
