The London Underground 'Bullseye' logo is iconic the world over and synonymous with the hustle and bustle of England's capital city. Here we have a large (1.35m wide) early, one piece die-cut enamel sign from the Oakwood tube station which is in the North of London on the Piccadilly line.
The station opened on 13 March 1933 as part of the Cockfosters extension and was originally named Enfield West, but on 1 September 1946 it was re-named Oakwood and that's almost definitely when this sign was produced. It's a die-cut example and would have originally had a bronze border around the name plate (hence the holes) and around the outer edge.
The production costs of these die-cut examples was very high and as cost saving measure later examples were split into three pieces; two semi-circles (which could be produced en-mass) and a name plate which would all be held together in the framework. These are challenging to display and often get split up but this is an earlier one-piece example and displays beautifully.
These station signs were a fantastically high-quality production and it shows in the way that this has survived the years - it's still bright and vibrant and has a fantastic gloss... Decades of cleaning and a few passing vandals (all part of an authentic piece of London's history) have left some light surface scratches which are only really noticeable with a raking light. There's also a few small chips to the enamel; one patch to the bottom left corner of the name plate section, a couple around the outer edges, one small chip to the right side of the O and another over the W (which has been touched in with an enamel paint, probably during it's time 'in service') and a very small one to the right side of the name plate. To be honest I'm having to be very picky as it's a lovely example in fantastic order.
A truly eye catching and very iconic piece that can be hung with ease using the holes that would have originally held the brass frame and displays fantastically well. It measures 135cm wide x 103cm high.
