This is an antique decorative truncheon. A Scottish, beech Edinburgh police baton with handpainted detail, dating to the Victorian period, circa 1850.

Ebonised beech, with natural colour to the tactile ring turned handle
Delightful handpainted detail with the Edinburgh Coat of Arms
Coat of Arms bears the Latin phrase Nisi Dominus Frustra - without the Lord, we act in vain
Also accentuated with the district number in addition to the Victoria Regina cypher
