This is an antique landscape painting of Plymouth Breakwater. An English, framed watercolour, dating to the Victorian period, circa 1860.
At 1,560 metres long (1,710 yd) Plymouth Breakwater was completed in 1841, with the lighthouse at its western end first lit in 1844. Built to add a line of defence to the naval fleet moored up in Plymouth, the structure is situated 2.5 miles (4km) from the edge of Plymouth Hoe within the Sound - the name of the large bay the breakwater protects. An unlikely admirer was Napoleon Bonaparte, who is reported to have been impressed by the structure whilst on board HMS Northumberland, en route to his exile in St Helena. Not present at the time of this watercolour, the Breakwater has a distinctive, round fortification, completed in 1865 - the three rocks behind the breakwater in the picture formed the basis of where the fort was added.
This is a delightful antique landscape painting of Plymouth Breakwater, with an idyllic rendition of the view across Plymouth Sound. Tastefully framed and delivered ready to display.
