An ark was typically used for the storage of grain, such as meal, corn and flour. Traditionally it is understood the lid was not fixed in place and could therefore be removed and used as a trough for kneading and proving dough. For similar examples see the Medieval Kitchens, Haddon Hall, Derbyshire.
