Item Details

An early 20th century oil on board painting of a sailing yacht at sea. This painting came from the estate of Jack and Molly Pritchard, co-founders of the Isokon Furniture Company. The Isokon firm also included the Canadian architect Wells Coates and was started in 1929 to design and construct modernist houses and flats, along with furniture and fittings for them. Their most famous project was the Lawn Road flats in Hampstead which opened in 1934. The Pritchards lived for a while in the penthouse at Lawn Road, and then later at their Isokon bungalow in Blythborough, Suffolk.

Jack and Molly were keen sailors and in 1944 instigated the Theta Club, a holiday camp for young people to study the art and practice of sailing, including the maintenance and care of boats. It is quite possible that this painting is of their own personal sailing craft, no. 73.

Indistinctly signed by the artist. Dated 1944. Original, contemporary oak frame.
