https://www.decorativecollective.com/dealers/matt-crosby-interiors19th Century oak & leather Burgermeister armchair. English. Circa 1880.
Of unusual form, this style of chair was previously known as a 'round chair', and was first made in the former Dutch colonies of Indonesia and Sri Lanka from indigenous hardwoods in the 17th/18th Century. The style is distinguishable by its semi-circular back, round seat and six legs. This example is English and made around 1880.
The chair has been fully reupholstered and finished in a quality leather by Wildman & Bugby. It is soft & silky full grain aniline leather, with a beautifully aged, worn and distressed appearance that has been achieved by hand buffing the surface of the hide.
Hand carved, the semicircular back has three pierced and foliate-carved oval medallions, flanked by baluster turnings. The seat's apron has rocaille-carved decoration and six boldly-carved cabriole legs with lion's paw feet. Each of these is joined by baluster stretchers, with a central point turning.
The oak has the original finish. There are a few shrinkage lines in places along the semi circular back. The chair has no damage or woodworm. Sturdy with no loose joints.
The seat height is 41cm.
