https://www.decorativecollective.com/dealers/matt-crosby-antiques-interiorsPair of antique upholstered and worn giltwood armchairs by Charles Mellier & Co. England. Circa 1880.
The chairs have lovely and quite unusual proportions, and they are very comfortable.
Structurally the chairs are very sound and have no damage. The original gilding is worn.
They have been reupholstered in the recent past in a pale pink fabric using traditional inners. The condition is very good. There is a very minor mark to the fabric seat of one chair (last photograph) and some colour wear to the arms. The fabric is more even in colour than the photographs suggest.
The chairs stand on their original brass castors. The maker's print on the original pieces of hessian has been added back on to the underside during the reupholstering process.
The Anglo-French firm of Mellier & Co was recognized as one of the finest furniture-making firms in England in the late 19th Century. Charles Mellier is recorded as beginning his career in the award winning Anglo French firm of Georges-Alphonse Monbro, eventually taking over the company himself in 1868.
