Item Details

19th Century Napoleon III French polished agate & gilt metal mounted box of good size. Circa 1860.


An almost identical example is in the National Trust collection.


Beautifully figured agate stone showing various colours and tones. The top and underside having bevelled ends, the front detailed with a large tooled escutcheon. The box surrounded by chased gilt edgings, standing on ball detailed feet,


There is a minute nick to the top agate, possibly natural. The back right foot is slightly out of shape. The box still stands relatively, but not quite, level. This is minimal. There is no key for the lock.
