Item Details

A late Art Deco Bauhaus oak compact wardrobe made by United UP, Czechoslovakia. Circa 1940.

Attributed to Jindřich Halabala, who designed for United UP and was head of the architectural studio in 1930, and then later plant director until 1946. United Up was one of the most influential furniture companies in Czechoslovakian history.

Jindřich Halabala and his collaborators created a production programme that uniquely combined the functionalist principles of Bauhaus with the graceful shapes of Art Deco.

The small wardrobe is in excellent condition, showing some signs of use to the finish in places. It has been cleaned and waxed. There is a slight mark to the top to note, and a small indentation horizontally across the right hand door. Please refer to the photographs.

Veneered in oak, with vertical beech handles around a contrasting walnut book match central circular design. The wardrobe stands on an ebonised plinth. A simple and smart design, the interior is lined in oak with open compartments to one side and a pull-out aluminium hanger to the other.

The original key works the locking mechanism well. Interestingly, the pull-out metal clothes hanger is made by Oldehall England. There is a Czech utility stamp to the inside.

There is no maker's label to this item, but it is a recognised design from this company, and I have owned two of these previously in the last couple of decades, both of which were labelled.
