Item Details

This pair of candlesticks showcases a captivating blend of Gothic Revival and Art Nouveau styles, attributed to a follower of Augustus Pugin, a key figure in the Gothic Revival movement. The candlesticks feature tall, slender stems that taper gracefully upward, culminating in a circular drip tray and shallow candle holder. The stems are elegantly proportioned, with a bulbous lower section adorned with medallion-like engravings.

The base is a standout feature, supported by three curvilinear tripod legs that terminate in paw-like feet, reflecting both Gothic and naturalistic motifs. The intricate scrollwork and organic forms in the design align with the Art Nouveau movement's emphasis on flowing lines and nature-inspired aesthetics, while the overall structure pays homage to Pugin’s love for medieval craftsmanship and ornamentation.

Condition:
Well-preserved with a rich patina consistent with age. Minor wear and surface scratches are visible, adding to the authenticity of the pieces. One Candle Sconce is slightly loose. Can be fixed to be straight.

Functionality:
Designed for holding candles, these candlesticks were likely intended for decorative or ceremonial use in a formal interior.

Significance:
These candlesticks reflect the transitional design aesthetic of the late 19th to early 20th centuries, merging the intricate ornamentation of the Gothic Revival with the fluid elegance of Art Nouveau. The attribution to a follower of Augustus Pugin further enhances their historical and artistic significance, as Pugin was a leading figure in the Gothic Revival, known for his dedication to medieval design principles.
