Item Details

A handsome early English antique chair with turned front supports a carved back panel, shaped down swept arms and a plank seat.

Naturalistic carving with geometric shapes and foliate motifs surrounding a central version of the Tree of Life.

Probably Northern English and possibly more specifically from Yorkshire.

Constructed from peg-joined oak with a wonderfully rich patina.

Dating from the reign of Charles II in the second half of the 17th Century, circa 1680.

It is in good condition for a piece of furniture of its age, it has obviously lived a life so there are imperfections throughout but these add to its charm and tell its story. It is solid, sturdy and usable. There is a verticle crack running down the back panel but this doesn’t really affect use. There is wear commensurate with age and some old repairs, chiefly to one of the back legs, two bracing panels across the back and two blocks added under the seat to shure up the front legs. These have all added to the chair’s sturdiness. There is a small amount of old dead worm present which we have treated for good measure.

Measuring 114cm high x 67cm wide x 51cm deep. The seat height is roughly 44cm.
