ANTIQUE LEATHER FIRE BUCKET

A hugely decorative piece with bags of character.

Thick gauge leather formed with iron stud rivets and strap.

Remnants of layers of old paint underneath the top red layer which probably dates from the 19th century. Naturally worn to great decorative effect.

Originally would have been used as the first line of defence against fires containing either sand or water in case of emergency to extinguish fires. Leather fire buckets were used between the 17th and 19th Centuries and were the fire extinguishers of their day.

This example dates from the late 18th/early 19th Century period during the reign of George III.

Could be used for any number of storage solutions today or as an accent piece as an extremely decorative object in its own right.

It is in good vintage order and as a whole it feels strong and sturdy, it is a naturally worn piece with imperfections throughout which add to its aesthetic and tell its story. The leather strap is still intact and usable. I wouldn’t say it is watertight anymore but still a usable bucket for other purposes.

Approximate measurements excluding handle 32cm high x 29cm wide x 28cm deep.
