Item Details

Antique oil on board painting by James Joshua Guthrie (1874-1952).

An extremely romantic image depicting various figures of different ages walking a path through the woods at sunset. Probably in Flansham, West Sussex.

The artist has really managed to capture a magical, slightly ethereal feeling using a rich colour palette and confident brushstrokes to great effect.

Painter, illustrator, designer, printer and writer Guthrie was born in Glasgow, while working as a metalworker he also studied art at Heatherley’s School of Fine Art as well as at The British Museum. In the late 19th century he founded The Pear Tree Press as well as The Elf Magazine. He published his own books being responsible for the entire process and his illustrations were considered quite experimental. During his lifetime he exhibited at The RA, RSA, IS, and Baillie Gallery as well as at the Barcelona International Exhibition, where he won a gold medal. He lived in Flansham, West Sussex.

Inscribed verso ‘Woodland Painting, James Joshua Guthrie, Prob. Flansham, Bognor, Circa 1920s/30s/40s.’

In its original and highly decorative naturalistic gilt frame.

The painting itself is in very good vintage condition with only minor wear commensurate with age.
