A striking and decorative painting depicting a thick wooded landscape from the point of view looking out through the darker trees out into the light beyond.
Painted in a stylised, almost Art Deco manner, capturing the light and shade expertly utilising a varied colour palette to great effect.
Painted by Maurice Peltier (1918-1993), a painter and writer and very attached to his native village of Irchonwelz, Belgium. Peltier was a prominent personality of the Ath region. His career as a teacher, painter, poet, storyteller, animator, but also restorer of old buildings is marked by multiple distinctions. Like his childhood friends, Louis Vindal and René Huvelle, he was one of the most ardent defenders of the Picard d'Ath.
Signed ‘M. Peltier’ to the lower left with a business card in the stretcher verso.
It probably dates to the mid-20th century period. Circa 1930s-1960s.
The painting is in good vintage condition with some minor wear commensurate with age. On close inspection, there is a craquelure to the surface throughout.
Approximate measurements 81cm x 70cm x 2cm.
