Item Details

A large, rare and impressive pair of antique Thai Nagas in completely original condition. Each carved from a single massive, 2.5 inch thick slab of teak.  Gilded, and highlighted with mirrored glass, the reverse side black. Mounted on substantial blocks of black painted teak. Late 19th Century, Thailand. 168cm x 61cm x 6.5cm

Serpent-like Naga serve as Buddhist temple guardians throughout Thailand, often depicted as majestic statues, acting as sentinels and protectors. They can be seen adorning balustrades, roofs, and corners of temple structures.

This beautiful, matched pair will look incredible either side of a sofa or fireplace, at the bottom of a staircase etc. They are large but not overpowering. Elegant, bold, stylish and charming and have the versatility to fit in in a huge variety of situations and environments.

Both Naga are in exceptional condition with no losses to the carving and all the original pieces of mirrored glass still present. They have acquired a tremendous and complex surface patina, while one Naga, (on the right in our main image) has a greater loss of gilding than the other and appears a bit duller at the bottom half. Please refer to the images and video for detail. More images available here
