https://www.decorativecollective.com/dealers/roche-cowardDating to the mid/late 18th century, these magnificent cats are incredibly rare, beautifully carved, substantial and impressive. The subtle curves are elegant and tactile, the patina incredible.
Carved from several pieces of heavy teak, the Mughal influence has brought together traditional Indian craftsmanship and the Indian Tiger with the style and posture (front paw raised, tail curved along the back) of the Persian Lion. A beautiful melding of two cultures, forming a unique and dramatic work of art.
These are in completely original, unrestored condition with no damage or losses but for the tops of the ears (to both). Both tigers retain a significant amount of the original polychromy (including black stripes to the tails and legs, crimson tongues and white teeth). All the joining pins appear original, as do the hand carved bases. The condition of the mouths in particular is nothing short of astonishing, with no losses at all to any of the sharp teeth or the tongues, which are replete with all their original paint.
Height 61.5 cm, length 79 cm, 14.5kg each. More images available here
