Item Details

Antique wall mirror, Arts & Crafts style by Peerage, rectangular, brass foliate, signed, 1920`s ca, English.

This antique mirror has been gently cleaned while preserving the aged patina. It is ready to hang.

This antique mirror was made by Peerage Brass of England in early 20th Century. It is stamped "Peerage Reg. MADE IN ENGLAND" on the back metal plates holding the chain. It exemplifies the ideals & techniques of the Arts & Crafts Movement: the frame covered with embossed & hammered brass. This combined with early machine industrial design.

With applied foliate & floral decoration this mirror is strongly influenced by the Arts & Crafts Movement but kept modern with its minimal form. With its delicate proportions and elongated form, it would sit elegantly where a tall & narrow small mirror is needed, over a chest of drawers, dressing room, bathroom, in a cloakroom, stairs, or by the front door. It would suit a range of interiors such as Arts & Crafts, Art Deco, Hollywood Regency, Traditional, Country or Contemporary.

The brass frame has the wonderful original antique warm patina preserved, developed over the years. It has interesting & unique decorations, a combination of handmade & early machine made features. There is an embossed garland of flowers, leaves & fruits running along the frame creating depth & texture over a flat background. The outer edges of the frame are trimmed with a pressed rope-like pattern. The external brass trim is flat & simple, emphasizing the rectangular shape.

The solid brass sheet continues along the sides to the backside, fitted by decorative round brass nails. On the reverse there is the original antique wood fiberboard backplate.

To hang the mirror on the wall there is the original antique metal chain to the piece, which is attached by a ring to the two original antique metal plates, each screwed to the back wooden plate and stamped "Peerage Reg. MADE IN ENGLAND". The chain could be lengthened or shortened.

This mirror is set up at present to hang portrait, but the plates could be unscrewed & moved if preferred to hang horizontal.

The quality thick silver mirror insert is the original antique to the piece, and securely held in place behind the frame. It is fully reflective with a bevelled edge which adds a sense of depth.

This antique wall mirror is in very good condition for its age. The antique patina has been preserved on the brass. The brass frame is sound with no missing parts or cracks. The brass surfaces have the original clear lacquer present & an attractive warm patina developed over the years adding character, with minor rubbing & superficial marks. The original antique mirror surface is in very good condition, it is very reflective with no cracks or chips, hardly any superficial marks, and very few tiny black dots of foxing, all in line with age & wear and as expected for an antique piece.

PEERAGE BRASS OF ENGLAND HISTORY

The Company produced original copper & brass ware with the height of production between 1910-1940`s. Their aim was quality period reproductions of various decorative styles, which were occasionally marked.

The company had showrooms in England (Birmingham & London), New Zealand (Wellington), Spain (Madrid), U.S. (New York), Holland (Hilversum), South Africa (Johannesburg), Denmark (Copenhagen).
