This midcentury oil painting on canvas by André Michel Lwoff (1902-1994), a Nobel Laureate and microbiologist, depicts a tranquil landscape in the south of France. A tree stands in the center of the composition surrounded by a village of houses and mountains in the background. Its vibrant palette of colours is particularly striking, with the warm orange and ochre of the houses contrasting with the green of the trees and the cool blue of the shadows. The landscape features a strong sense of pattern, from the geometric shapes of the architecture to the undulating branches of the tree.


This large work is mounted in a giltwood frame and will add a warm burst of colour to any room. It is signed and dated 1978 in the lower left corner.
