The orange hues of the roof tiles contrast beautifully with the green and blue colours of the trees and the river. The deceptively simple charm of the scene is juxtaposed with the high viewpoint from which it is depicted, creating a striking depth with the vertical rocks of the cliff in the foreground balanced against the flatness of the river and its sandy banks. This particularly evocative landscape is mounted in a striking Montparnasse original frame, carved with lush scrolls, and painted in distressed cream colours.
