This midcentury oil painting on paper by Romanian artist Paul Ackerman (1908-1981) portrays a bouquet of red flowers in a black vase, displayed on a table covered by a cloth. The foliage of the bouquet blends with a painterly background of green and brown waves showcasing the vibrant textures of oil paint. The reflection of light on the vase as well as the fiery red and orange of the flowers and cloth brings a dynamic contrast to this still life.


This still life is rendered in an evocative blend of figuration and abstraction, characteristic of Ackerman’s work. A friend of Pierre Bonnard, he worked in Paris among Eastern European painters from the School of Paris. Signed by the artist, this elegant work is mounted in a black and gold frame.
