This captivating oil painting on canvas by French artist Suzanne Jean, titled Fonds Marins (Underwater) and dated 1952, presents a dynamic abstract composition of curves and circles layered over vertical stripes, anchored by a red form reminiscent of a face. Vivid reds, oranges, and yellows contrast with cool purples and blues, evoking the shifting essence of ocean waves. Subtle surrealist maritime elements appear throughout, with small round shapes resembling fish eyes and seashells gathered at the centre, creating a dreamlike seascape. Jean employs an arresting array of techniques, layering textured brushstrokes over deep patches of colour to evoke a rich and vibrant underwater landscape.


Though little is known of Suzanne Jean’s artistic career, this work clearly engages with the artistic movements shaping 1950s France.
