Huge Stoneware "Atticware" Painted Vase. Impressive painted stoneware storage vessel, inspired by Ancient Greek Black and Red figure vessels. Astonishing decoration of ancient tales in remarkable original condition. Magrou was a renowned sculptor in Bronze with a heavy interest in the Ancient Civilisations, this huge example is likely to be unique and produced for himself during the period researching his 1931 publication "Skulptur and Beauty in Ancient Greece". Signed Jean Magrou, France, Circa 1930. Jean Marie Joseph Magrou (1869 - 1945) was a French sculptor born in Bezier, France. and was a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. He studied at the Lycee Henri IV being gifted in Latin and Greek and very interested in Mythology. Having excelled in sculpture he travelled to Paris to attend the Paris School of Fine Arts here he studied under Eugene Emile Thomas and Injalbert. Eventually he became a Professor of modelling and drawing at the Sorbonne, it was here that in 1907 he participated in the revolutionary Cooperative d'enseignement created by Marie Curie. In 1931 he published "Skulptur and Beauty in Ancient Greece".
