https://www.decorativecollective.com/dealers/the-school-for-scandalMacaronies drawn after the life, satire etching housed in a period Birds Eye maple frame circa 1800
The etching, coloured by hand, and divided into two parts. On the left is represented a young man, a macaroni, standing at a round table, and, with linked fingers, leaning one elbow on a book, the label on which bears "Weber & Hoyle", i.e. a book on gaming or whist; near this is a second book, marked "Woman of Pleasure"; likewise a pack of cards.
The other side shows a skeleton with a elbow on a tomb with the inscription
“Here lies Interr’d Dicky Daffodil, who in a fit of Despair on a run of ill luck swallowed the Die which lodging on his heart, brought on the bone fever & a Mortification, it was maliciously reported that he fell on the points of C. Hayes’s scizzars, & not by those of the Fates./Mores Janua Vitae”.
Age related discoloration and staining.
