This is a pair of exquisite antique French gilded wood carvings that dates from the early 19th century or the Empire period. Discovered recently in the South of France these magnificent treasures were once most certainly the finials of a grand interior with gilded panelings and mouldings. Each one depicts feeding birds in their nest. The nest is made of clouds and flower garlands. Above are the top parts of arrows [feathers] and beneath are their metal extensions. This way the carvings can be positioned as crowning finials on the top of mirrors or picture frames, for example. Each carving measures about 44 x 25 cm or approximately 17.3 x 9.8 inches and they are in lovely antique condition with signs of ageing mainly seen in a gorgeous patina created by the passage of time. They are exactly as I discovered them in Avignon, France. For the full condition please refer to the images!
