This is an absolutely gorgeous and rare antique Italian painting of Madonna and Child that originates from Naples, early 1800's. The oval shape painting measures about 42 x 31 cm or approximately 16.5 x 12.2 inches. It is an oil on wood art work with exceptional colours and composition. Adorned with crowns and stars, the Madonna and the Child are taking the central part of this tableau with St Dominic and St Catherine positioned on each side. It shows the legend of St. Dominic - from 1208 - when the Madonna appeared and presented him with the rosary as a weapon of faith. This is a stunning work of art that is still in lovely antique condition with some minor signs of ageing which in my opinion only enhances its true beauty and splendour today.
