This is an absolutely marvellous and one of a kind antique Italian santo that dates from the 18th century. Discovered recently in Naples this outstanding devotional statue - most certainly of the Virgin Mary - is hand carved from wood except for the eyes being made of glass. It is created as a bust with the arms being attached to the body with strong wires covered in ropes and other natural fibres. The hands with interlocked fingers are masterfully carved from wood. The statue is positioned on a baroque wooden base that is partially gilded in gold and silver. This santo is a remarkable ancient treasure of poignant beauty, great artistic quality as well as the mesmerising appeal enhanced by the stunning patina created by the passage of time. It is an extremely rare santo that is exactly as I discovered it with signs of ageing that in my opinion only bring forth its true beauty and splendour today.
